Q: “What is an inexpensive way to minimize the appearance of fine lines around the eyes and mouth?”

Monday, March 5th, 2012

THE BEAUTY JUNKIE ANSWERS YOU:

A:  Now is a great time to take a close look at your current skin care regimen and make sure you are not skipping any steps that allow for signs of aging to creep up on your complexion.  Here are five steps to follow to achieve AND maintain flawless and youthful skin from hairline to jawline!

  1. Cleanse – use a wrinkle-fighting cleanser that contains peptides and exfoliates with jojoba beads.  Our Exfoliating Cleanser is formulated with Argireline, a peptide that relaxes repetitive facial contractions to combat creases plus jojoba beads to slough away dead skin cells, enabling skin to better absorb the wrinkle-fighting treatments that follow.
  2. Anti-aging Serum – apply a serum rich in collagen-boosting peptides and DMAE, an anti-inflammatory that increases firmness throughout the skin.  I personally use HydroPeptide’s Cellular Transformation Serum because it contains DMAE plus six peptides that include a milk polypeptide and growth factors that really plump up and firm my skin!
  3. Anti-aging Cream – lavish skin with another layer of peptides, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and natural licorice for added skin-brightening benefits.  I recommend HydroPeptide’s Power Lift cream for day and night because not only does it have all these key actives but it also contains 21 hydrating elements and Trylagen, a peptide blend formulated to fight fine lines and other signs of aging.
  4. Eye Cream – make it a peptide-packed formula for maximum wrinkle-lifting benefits and to reduce puffiness and dark circles.  I swear by HydroPeptide Eye because it contains seven peptides, including Syn-Coll, a peptide that diminished the appearance of wrinkles by 350% in clinical trials.
  5. Sun Protection – choose one with an antioxidant blend and an SPF of 30 to protect your skin while neutralizing the threat of free radical damage.  My product pick for this one is HydroPeptide’s SPF 30 because it contains color-changing spheres that self-adjust for a flawless finish for all skin tones plus an antioxidant blend that includes Acai berry, a free-radical fighter with 10x the antioxidant power of red grapes.

In the meantime, here are some age-proofing makeup tips to try:

  • Use the right shade of concealer and apply it with a light hand.
    • Lightly pat a pink- or peach-toned corrective concealer to the under-eye area.
    • Follow with a light application of a yellow-toned concealer.
    • Apply the concealer close to the lashes and to the inner corner of the eye as well.
    • Use a lip brush to blend the edges of the concealer for a flawless final touch!
  • Use eyeliner to your advantage.
    • When lining eyes, extend the liner slightly at the outer corner of the eye.
    • If needed, use gentle strokes to broaden the line so that the liner is thick enough to be visible when your eyes are open.
  • Plump your pout, immediately!
    • Apply a lip gloss containing lip-plumping and anti-aging ingredients.  HydroPeptide Lip contains Tripeptide-29, a collagen-building peptide that increased lip volume by 40% and minimized fine lines by 29% after a 29 day trial period.  This pretty and pain-free plumping gloss also has Benzyl Nicotinate, a vasodialator that opens up capillaries for fuller lips in 10 minutes!

Get a facial requiring zero downtime…no appointment necessary.

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Extend the glow of your professional facials with proper home care. By proper home care, I mean treating yourself to a weekly facial by turning your bathroom into a spa! It is even easier done than said – here are the steps to a DIY facial for radiant skin between appointments.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE:

An at-home peel
- Whip up a moisturizing facial scrub without leaving home by combining a spoonful of brown sugar and enough olive oil to make a paste.
- For exfoliating AND skin-plumping benefits, try HydroPeptide’s Anti-Wrinkle Polish & Plump Peel, a refreshing blend of Vitamin C crystals, lactic acid and peptides.
A mask appropriate to your skin type
- Normal to oily skin: choose a clay-based formula for extracting oil and other potential pore-cloggers, complexion-brightening bearberry and peptides to counteract signs of aging.
- Normal to dry skin: a moisturizing antioxidant and peptide-rich mask. Hydrating ingredients to look for include Shea Butter and Sodium Hyaluronate.
An anti-aging serum
The most effective skin-firming, wrinkle-smoothing formulas contain the following peptides: Syn- Ake, Myoxinol, Snap 8, Syn-Tacks and Syn-Coll. Alpha Lipoic Acid is another active to insist upon, for its capacity to reduce inflammation and boost cellular metabolism. I have tried a few different formulas before but the one I swear by is HydroPeptide’s Cellular Transformation Serum because within a few weeks of including it in my regimen I was told that my skin looks only eighteen years old!

THE 8 STEP HOME FACIAL:

1. Start with a clean, dry face.
2. Gently massage a dime-sized amount of polishing crystals over skin for 2 minutes.
3. Apply a thin layer of the peel activator without rinsing off the polishing crystals and massage gently for 1 minute.
4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat skin dry.
5. Apply 1/8 tsp of a hydrating and wrinkle-smoothing serum to face and neck.
6. Apply the mask appropriate to your skin type.
7. Rinse the mask off thoroughly with lukewarm water after leaving it on for the time recommended on the label, usually 10- 30 minutes, depending on the formula.
8. Apply serum and then day or night cream.

Prolong the afterglow of your professional facials up until your next appointment by keeping this weekly commitment to your skin. The payoff for spending a few extra minutes a week caring for your skin? Fewer “bad skin days.” Who has time for those, anyway?

THE BEAUTY JUNKIE ANSWERS YOU:

Q: What can be done to reduce the appearance of scars and blemishes left behind by a breakout?

- Michelle Font, Miss Washington USA 2008

A: A pigment corrector is the best approach to treating the slightly thicker, darker and drier patch of skin left behind by a pimple. Choose a pigment corrector with the following five active ingredients to safely fade the mark within a few weeks:
1. Beta white – a brightening peptide (peptides are protein fragments that support the skin’s structure).
2. Chromabright – a tyrosinase* inhibitor.
3. Lactic Acid – choose a 2% concentration for healthy skin renewal.
4. Licorice: natural plant-derived skin lightener that inhibits tyrosinase*.
5. Allantoin: from comfrey plant – stimulates growth of healthy tissue and promotes exfoliation of layers of darkened skin.
*Tyrosinase activity causes skin to react by producing melanin, a cause of darker skin pigment.

Quick fix makeup tip: Use a lip brush to apply a dab of green concealer on top of the healing blemish (sounds odd but the green tint helps neutralize redness) and follow with a touch of skin-tone matching concealer. Set with a light dusting of loose powder to fake a more uniform complexion until the mark fades completely.

Master the NEW smoky eye (hint, it’s an updated version of legendary bombshell Raquel Welch’s signature brown shadow) in 5 steps!
1. Begin by applying a shimmery mocha shadow from the lash line to the crease of the eyelid.
2. Contour from the outer to the middle of the eyelids with a charcoal shadow drawn in a side-ways “v” shape. Using a small, flat eyeshadow brush, start the bottom of the “v” at the outer corner of each eye and extend the top of the “v” slightly above the crease.
3. Blend the darker shadow where it meets the lighter shadow.
4. For extra oomph, line the upper lash line with black liquid eyeliner, extending the line slightly past the outer corners of each eye.
5. Complete your seductive eye effect by curling lashes and adding two coats of thickening mascara to top and bottom lashes.
The secret to the vixen’s luscious lips revealed…
Less is more for a lip look that compliments your bold and sexy eye makeup. Line lips with a nude lipliner. Blend the lipliner with a Qtip so that lips look poutier but natural. Layer a pale pink, plumping gloss for an irresistible effect!

Boost Beauty Overnight!

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Hair: French braid freshly washed and dried hair before bed. Unravel the braids and comb through with your fingers in the a.m. for pretty, textured waves in seconds. It is important to start with dry hair because braiding wet hair will trap moisture to the scalp, resulting in flaking and irritated skin. Wet hair should not be braided for the same reason lingering in sweaty gym clothes post-workout is not recommended. By braiding hair promptly after washing and drying, hair stands a better chance of holding a wave without hairspray or other pore-clogging products.

Eyes: Prevent crow’s feet and wake up bright-eyed by applying half a pea-sized amount of a peptide-based eye cream in a gentle, circular motion to the eye area above the crease and below the eyes on the area at risk for under-eye circles.

Lips: Apply a lip conditioner formulated with plumping and hydrating ingredients before bed to wake up with a full and soft pout. This simple nighttime beauty trick will allow you to wake up with naturally more beautiful lips! “Dress” your lips before heading out the door with a dab of clear gloss or a tinted balm.

Skin:
• Face: Although anti-aging serum and night cream are still a must after your p.m. cleansing routine, get the most out of your beauty sleep with an anti-aging pillowcase. We like the Circadia pillow case by Dr. Pugliese.
• Body: Wake up with beautiful bronze skin without putting yourself at risk for future wrinkles and dermal damage by applying a mixture of ½ body lotion and ½ of your favorite sunless tanner before bed. Give your skin at least 5 minutes to dry and wash hands thoroughly before putting on dark, loose-fitting pajamas. Rinse the sunless tanner off in the morning, pat skin dry and get glowing!

Be the face the camera loves with these makeup and skin care how-to’s

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Just in time for holiday parties, winter galas and other upcoming occasions when we need to look our most photogenic, be the face the camera loves with these makeup and skin care tips!

The most photogenic makeup:  Opt for a light foundation WITHOUT SPF.  It is important for the makeup to be free of SPF because those protective ingredients cause the face to look paler than the rest of the skin in photos.   As far as brands, you can’t go wrong with Mac because their formulas are appropriate for every makeup look from every day wear to high fashion photo shoots and film and television.

How long in advance to get a facial:  It is best to get a facial done a week before your special event to ensure that skin is glowing and any skin irritation has subsided by the time the big day arrives.  If an appointment cannot be made that far in advance and your skin is sensitive, an at-home facial is your best bet.  The best at-home facial is an at-home microdermabrasion peel followed by a mask.  The Fitness Magazine Award-Winning Polish and Plump Peel and Mask by HydroPeptide are great picks for the home treatment.  They are effective but gentle enough that skin will be camera-ready without requiring irritation recovery time.
